The rotating recess system feeds into the work-piece and the pilot locates in the bore. |

As the IRU system feeds forward, the Nose Piece contacts the work-piece, or fixture, and at this point the system will start to lift the cutter, at a 2:1 ratio, exactly perpendicular to the axis of rotation. |

As the IRU system continues to feed forward, the cutter feeds out simultaneously machining all the features concentric to the main bore. Once the groove diameter is reached, the feed direction is reversed and the system moved clear of the bore. |
The surface speed starting point in Metres per minute (m/min) is normally equal to that recommended for multi-fluted reamers. However, the speeds can be increased up to 3x’s the rates suggested below.
| Material Machined | Carbide Speed m/min | HSS Speed m/min |
| Grey Cast Iron | 30 to 35 | 15 to 20 |
| Nodular Cast Iron | 15 to 25 | 8 to 15 |
| Steel forgings | 15 to 20 | 8 to 12 |
| Aluminium & Brass | 50 to 55 | 20 to 30 |
Feed rates of 0.08 to 0.12 mm/rev are typical starting points for most applications. Where the bore is less than Ø12mm, when machining multiple wide grooves, or when using HSS cutters, it may be necessary to decrease the feed rate to 0.03 to 0.06 mm/rev.
